August 4: "New speed record "
Another cycling day without a drop of rain but without a ray of sun either.
Almost perfectly flat terrain and our growing strength explains our speed
(19 km/h average, the fastest day of the month). Huge expanses of lava fields
covered with thick moss. Sightings of glaciers descending the sides of Mont
Katla. Arrival at Kirkjubaejarklaustur (for pronunciation, the preceding city,
Vik, was definitely easier) at 3 o'clock. We shared the clean, spatious, and
heated dining room with a group of French compatriotes (touring Iceland in
a 4WD) including Pierre, extremely enthusiastic about the recumbent concept
because of his aching back. I think that my demonstration run with him in
Anne's seat will be decisive in his decision to purchase a single-seater.
Tomorrow we aim for Skaftafell at the edge of Vatnajökull, the largest
icecap in Europe with a surface greater than that of Corsica. All sorts of
new wonders to be discovered.
